While they may not have the best track record when it comes to environmental issues, ExxonMobil is looking to change that with a $170 million investment in carbon storage technology.
The first $70 million of that will go towards a capture and storage project for 6 million metric tons of carbon emissions annually from its natural gas plant in La Barge, WY. The other $100 million will be invested in a technology that will strip carbon out of natural gas; a goal they hope to achieve by 2010. While $170 million is a drop in the bucket for an oil company that has reported record profits for 2008, it’s certainly a step in the right direction, especially considering their recent environmental stances.
