Here’s a statistic that will make your head spin: For every 2,000 square foot house involved in construction, approximately 8,000 pounds of waste is generated! Wow. The majority of that waste is comprised of wood, cardboard and drywall which will most likely end up in a landfill. If you work in the construction field or plan to be involved in construction here are a few tips to green your site:
- Streamline the materials that come into the construction site.
- Plan to separate waste into purposeful piles that can be recycled, reused or thrown away.
- Assign a person to oversee the proper disposal of items at the site.
Of course the planet will benefit, since an estimated 40% of solid-waste landfill is due to construction, but your efforts could also reduce the cost of the project and provide reusable items for future projects. Maybe even less fortunate individuals could benefit from your recycled goods. Think outside the box and you’ll reap big (green) benefits.
